Zanaflex is a very efficient muscle relaxant and is used to treat muscle spasms caused by certain situations (for example spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis). This drug contains Tizanidine hydrochloride as the chief active ingredient in it. Tizanidine works by delaying the nerve impulses that are sent to your nervous system. Zanaflex is also approved to be used in case of certain headache complaints, signs of fibromyalgia, and can also be used as a sleeping aid.


Mechanism of action of Zanaflex

Zanaflex works as an agonist on central alpha-2-adrenergic receptors and apparently decreases spasticity by increasing presynaptic blockage of motor neurons.


What dose of Zanaflex should be taken?

Zanaflex is available in both capsule and tablet form. In tablet formulations, two different dosage strengths are available i.e. 2 mg and 4 mg. The normal initial dose is 2 mg taken orally every six to eight hours. Do not take more than three doses (i.e. 36 mg) of Zanaflex in 24 hour duration. Your physician could increase the strength in 2- to 4-mg periods to help reach the optimal effect and acceptance for your condition.


Indications of Zanaflex 4mg

Zanaflex is indicated for the management of spasticity.

The use of Zanaflex should be avoided in following cases:

  • Zanaflex or Tizanidine may be harmful to an unborn baby. Thus it should not be taken while breastfeeding. Also this drug should not be given to a pregnant woman.

  • Avoid taking this medicine if you have low blood pressure.

  • If you are suffering from or have a history of any kidney disease, liver disease, do not take Zanaflex 4mg.

  • This medicine may make you sleepy or dizzy. Do not perform any kind of heavy physical activity that demands attention while taking this drug until you are certain you can carry out such activities safely.

  • Avoid intake of alcoholic beverages while taking Zanaflex.


Possible side effects

Zanaflex 4mg can cause certain side effects which may include the below mentioned harmful reactions:

  • Allergic reactions such as shortness of breath or swelling of your extremities like throat, face, tongue or lips.

  • Neurological: hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behaviour, confusion, feeling light-headed

  • Gastrointestinal: nausea, jaundice (yellowness of the skin or eyes), loss of hunger, stomach pain, dark urine, clay-coloured stools.


Apart from side effects, withdrawal symptoms such as tremor, anxiety, increased blood pressure, heart rate, and muscle tension, may occur if you stop using this drug all of a sudden.


Drug - Drug Interactions

 Do not take Tizanidine if you are also taking the following drugs:


  • Antibiotics such as fluvoxamine or ciprofloxacin

  • Antiarrhythmic medicines like amiodarone

  • Anti-ulcer drugs such as cimetidine

  • Heart medications like ticlopidine

  • Oral contraceptives

  • Antiviral drugs such as acyclovir


Safety tips for Zanaflex 4mg

  • Keep a track of the quantity of medicine used from each new bottle.

  • Never share this medicine with another person, especially somebody with a history of drug abuse since this drug may be habit forming. Use the medicine only when you have pain.


What to do in case of missed dose or skipped dose?

Since medicine for relieving pain is taken as needed, a dosing schedule is not necessary. If you are taking Zanaflex regularly, as soon as you remember you can take the missed dose. If it is almost the time for your next scheduled dose, you may skip the missed dose as taking extra medicine may lead to undesirable effects and addiction.


What to do in case of overdose?

Using too much Generic Tizanidine can severely damage your liver, leading to hepatic failure. Apart from liver failure, its overdose may also cause lethargy, confusion, low blood pressure and bradycardia i.e. low heartbeat.

Contact the local poison centre for the management of this overdose.


How to properly store the drug?

Store the medicine at room temperature away from exposure of heat and moisture.
