Xefo is a magical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and anti-rheumatic drug. Generic Lornoxicam is present in this drug as the chief active ingredient. Xefo belongs to the class of “oxicams” of NSAIDs with anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties. This drug is indicated for short term pain management and treatment of moderate to severe pain, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and their associated signs and symptoms for example, inflammation of joints. Generic Lornoxicam is a powerful inhibitor of both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes.


Prescribed dosage and intake of Xefo

Xefo is administered by mouth and should be taken before meals with a full glass of water.

  • For the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis:

The initial approved total daily dose is 12 mg per day in two to three divided doses. The maximum dose should not exceed 16 mg per day.

  • For the treatment of pain in adults:

Xefo is given in the dose of 8 mg to 16 mg per day given in 2 to 3 divided doses. The maximum daily dose is 24 mg per day and should not exceed 24 mg per day.

  • If you are suffering from liver or kidney impairment, do not take more than 12 mg (taken twice or three times a day) of this drug.


Therapeutic Uses

Xefo is prescribed for the symptomatic treatment and management of pain and swelling accompanying rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.


What are the side effects of Xefo?

The common side effects of this drug may include: dizziness, allergic reactions, headache, increased sweating, loss of weight, changes in appetite, swelling, weakness.

The more serious side effects of this medicine may include:

  • yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice): these are symptoms of liver disorders.

  • serious or persistent stomach ache or your stools become black.

  • difficulty in breathing, chest pain, or ankle inflammation appear or get worse.

  • unusually, serious infections of the skin for example, chickenpox.

  • fever, blistering outburst or swelling especially on hands and feet or in the mouth region.

  • an allergic skin reaction: which may include skin ulcers or blistering, or swelling of the tongue, face, throat or lips, or difficulty in breathing.



Xefo is contra-indicated in the following classes of patients:

  • Those hypersensitive to Generic Lornoxicam, or any of the ingredients in Xefo

  • Bleeding and coagulation disorders

  • Bleeding in stomach or gastric area

  • Patients with severe or uncontrolled cardiac failure

  • Those who have a history of hypersensitivity reactions (angioedema, bronchospasm, or urticaria or rhinitis) to other NSAIDs, for instance aspirin

  • Patients with active or history of peptic ulceration

  • Patients with severe liver and renal impairment

  • Patients with thrombocytopenia

  • Elderly patients (more than 65 years of age) and young patients (under 18 years of age)

  • Pregnancy or lactation


Drug Interactions

  • Other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or aspirin: increased risk of adverse reactions.

  • Sulphonylureas drugs: may increase the hypoglycaemic effect.

  • Concomitant administration of Xefo and anticoagulants or platelet aggregation inhibitors: may prolong the bleeding time.

  • ACE inhibitors: the effect of the ACE inhibitor may decrease and there is a risk of acute renal insufficiency.

  • Diuretics such as furosemide: decreased efficacy, counteract the diuretic effect of furosemide.

  • Lithium: might lead to an increase of the lithium peak concentration and thereby causing a possible increase in adverse events.

  • Digoxin: decreased renal clearance of digoxin.

  • Cyclosporine: increased renal toxicity.

  • Methotrexate: increased blood concentration of methotrexate high dose; avoid its use concomitantly. Special caution must be taken if both NSAIDs and methotrexate are administered within 24 hours.   


Warnings and Precautions

  • Avoid driving or engaging into any heavy physical activity that demands attention as this drug causes drowsiness or dizziness.

  • Xefo is not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age. There is no requirement for special dosage modification in case of elderly patients, unless renal or hepatic function is impaired. If the renal or hepatic function is impaired, the daily dosage should be restricted.

  • Care should be implemented in patients with a history of asthma, infections, any allergy, bleeding disorder, impaired kidney, liver, heart function, high blood pressure, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
