General idea of Imitrex
The main constituent in Imitrex is Generic Sumatriptan succinate. Imitrex is a serotonin agonist which mimics the action of serotonin, which is responsible for the constriction of blood vessels. Imitrex is used to treat migraine headaches in adults, reduces pain and other migraine symptoms including nausea and sensitivity to light and sound by constricting the dilated blood vessels and return back to normal. Migraine headaches are believed to occur by broadening of blood vessels in the brain. Imitrex is at its most safe and effective when you feel the sign of a migraine headache is coming on. It is available in various formulations such as tablets as well as injections.
Sumitrex, Suminat, Sumaptan, Migrex, Imigran Subject, Somatran, Migratan can also be used in place of Imitrex as it contains same generic, Sumatriptan and functions in the same way as Imitrex does.
Imitrex is a drug that is used for treating migraine attacks with or without the occurrence of an aura, to relieve cluster headache attacks. Imitrex will only treat a headache that has already started, it will not prevent the headache or decrease the number of headache attacks.
Functioning of Imitrex
In Imitrex tablet, Generic Sumatriptan succinate is the active ingredient. It works by constriction of the blood vessels and thus helps to get rid of pain due to migraine. Thus stops the pain signals from being sent to the brain through the site of injury or pain.
Posology and Administration
In case of adults, single doses of 25, 50, or 100 mg of Imitrex Tablets provides beneficial results in the acute treatment of migraine. One tablet of Imitrex is to be taken orally with a full glass of water. Swallow the tablet as a whole, do not split or break the tablet. It is taken when you notice the first symptom of a migraine headache. The Imitrex tablets can be taken with or without food. The maximum daily dosage of Imitrex is 200mg. If migraine symptoms continue or headache does not get cured after the initial dose, take a second dose after 2 hours. If your migraine symptoms do not get recovered, contact your doctor before taking any more tablets.
When not to take Imitrex?
It is advisable not to use this drug in the following conditions:
Patients with hypersensitivity, other forms of migraine, or liver and kidney failure.
Patients who are suffering from or ever had heart related disorders such as angina, ischemic heart disease, hypertension, myocardial infarction, stroke or transient cerebrovascular disorder, peripheral arterial disease.
Caution while taking Imitrex should be exercised in patients with pregnancy, epilepsy, hypertension, breastfeeding, in infants and adolescents (below 18 years of age), in elderly patients older than 65 years of age.
Simultaneous intake of drugs which contain Ergotamine and its derivatives, MAO inhibitors with Imitrex.
If the patients are taking antidepressants like mono amine oxidase inhibitor drugs in the last 14 days.
The drugs which should not be taken along with Imitrex include:
Antidepressants such as Desvenlafaxine, Isocarboxazid, Phenelzine, Venlafaxine, Fluoxetine, Sertraline, Citalopram and Paroxetine
Ergot containing medicines such as Dihydroergotamine and Ergotamine
Possible risks and side effects
This drug is typically well tolerated and adverse reactions are rare. Most frequent side effects include flushing, nasal irritation, sweating, tingling, weakness, muscle cramping, pain or tightness in the chest or throat, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea and pain in injection site.
Take Imitrex Tablets only to treat a classic migraine attack, an acute cluster headache, it should not be used for treatment of certain unusual types of migraine.
This drug affects your ability to drive or operate machinery, thus it is advisable not to perform any kind of activity that demands attention.
Do not take more than the recommended dose of Imitrex tablets.
Do not use this tablet if you are lactose intolerant.
Imitrex Tablets is not meant for regular use, it is taken only during an attack. Do not miss the dose, if missed then do not take a double dose of this medicine.
You should contact your health care advisor immediately about your condition or overdose symptoms. Patients should be alert to overdosage symptoms such as tremors, vision problems, watery eyes or mouth, skin redness, lack of coordination, and weakness.
Proper storage of Imitrex
Store Imitrex at a temperature below 30°C protected from light, heat and moisture.
