What is Provera?

Provera with an active ingredient Medoxyprogesterone is a type of female hormone (progestin). This medication is similar to the progesterone that your body naturally makes and is given to replace the hormone when your body is not making enough of it. This medication has several uses. In women who are not pregnant and not going through menopause, this medication is used to treat abnormal bleeding from the uterus and to restore normal menstrual periods in women who have stopped having them for several months (amenorrhea).


Dosage Information for Provera:

Provera is available as 5mg and 10mg tablets. The dose of the medication is prescribed by the doctor. For usual dosing schedule of Secondary Amenorrhea is 5 to 10mg daily for 10 days.

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding Due to Hormonal Imbalance in the Absence of Organic Pathology:  Beginning on the calculated 16th or 21st day of the menstrual cycle, 5 or 10 mg of PROVERA may be given daily for 5 to 10 days.


Depression, High Blood Pressure, Any Disorder of the Blood Vessels of the Brain, Obstruction of a Blood Vessel by a Blood Clot, Blood Clot in Vein, At Risk for Formation of Blood Clots, Severe Liver Disease, Presence of Nodules in the Breast, Osteoporosis, Decreased Calcification or Density of Bone, Weight Gain, Breast Cancer, Family History of Breast Cancer, Diabetes, High Amount of Fats in the Blood, Water Retention, Porphyria

Drug Interactions:

You should not use following medications such as Aminoglutethimide, Rifampin, Azoles Antifungal including Itraconazole, certain Anti-seizure medicines including Carbamazepine/Phenobarbital/Phenytoin.


Precautionary Measures:

  • Avoid intake of alcohol products as it may increase the risk of side effects
  • Smoking combined with this medication further increases your risk for strokes, blood clots, high blood pressure, and heart attacks
  • This medication may cause blotchy, dark areas on your skin (melasma). Sunlight may worsen this effect. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning booths, and sunlamps
  • Avoid using the medication during pregnancy and lactation
