Lamisil with an active ingredient Terbinafine is an antifungal medication that fights infection caused by fungus. This medication is used to treat infection caused by fungus that affects fingernails or toenails. Lamisil can also be used to treat fungal infection of scalp hair follicles in children of age less than 4 years.
Mechanism of action for Lamisil:
Terbinafine which is the major active constituent present in Lamisil, which is hypothesized to act by inhibiting squalene monooxygenase, thereby blocking the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. This inhibition also results in an accumulation of squalene, which is a substrate catalyzed to 2,3-oxydo squalene by squalene monooxygenase. The resultant high concentration of squalene and decreased amount of ergosterol are both thought to contribute to terbinafine's antifungal activity.
