Outline of Advil

Generic Ibuprofen 200 mg is present in Advil as the chief active constituent. Advil works by reducing the hormones that cause pain and inflammation in the body. This drug is used to decrease the high body temperature and used in the treatment of swelling or pain caused by numerous conditions for example, back pain, toothache, arthritis, headache, minor injury or menstrual cramps. It acts through the inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzyme activity.

Indications for use

Advil is used for the treatment of mild to moderate pain caused by diverse number of diseases. It is prescribed for the treatment of:

  • Post-operative pain

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Soft tissue injuries

  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis

  • Menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea)

  • Post-partum pain

  • Rheumatoid arthritis


Mechanism of Action

Advil’s working is associated with inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) activity. COX is the precursor of prostaglandins, chemical that plays a major role in the pathogenesis of pain, inflammation, and fever.

The analgesic effect of Ibugesic is due to both central mechanism and peripheral (due to reduction of prostaglandin synthesis in the central and peripheral nervous system). Also, Ibuprofen inhibits the aggregation of platelets.



Advil Tablets come in the dosage strengths of 200 mg, 400 mg and 600 mg. The maximum amount of Advil for adults is 800 mg per dose or 3200 mg per day (4 maximum doses). It is advised to take the smallest dose of this drug to get relief from your pain, fever or inflammation. Take this drug with meal to reduce stomach upset.


Side Effects

The common side effects of Advil include headache, constipation, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhoea, mild itching or rashes and buzzing in your ears.

The more serious effects include increased sensitivity to light, severe tickling, fever, numbness, itching, neck stiffness, dark urine, anxieties, seizures, loss of appetite and severe headache.


Drug Interactions

  • Mood stabilizing agents such as lithium

  • Diuretics (water pills) such as furosemide

  • Antidepressants such as paroxetine, citalopram, sertraline, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine

  • Aspirin or other NSAIDs such as celecoxib, naproxen, diclofenac, Voltaren, and others

  • Blood thinning drugs (such as warfarin, coumadin) or anticoagulants

  • Quinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin

  • Steroids such as prednisone and others

  • Antiviral drugs such as Zidovudine

  • Heart or blood pressure medications such as enalapril, benazepril, quinapril, lisinopril, and ramipril



Avoid using Advil if you:

  • are hypersensitive to Generic Ibuprofen, aspirin or any other NSAID

  • are aged older than 65 years of age and children under 2 years of age

  • have high blood pressure and stroke

  • have an active peptic ulcer or bleeding in the stomach or intestine

  • are in the last three months of pregnancy

  • have swelling in your hands or feet

  • have severe heart, renal or liver failure

  • are suffering from asthma

  • have high cholesterol, diabetes, or smoke



Important information

  • Generic Ibuprofen may also cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be harmful for you.

  • Do not take more than the recommended dose of this drug.

  • Do not take this drug just before or after heart bypass surgery.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine. It may increase the risk of stomach bleeding.

  • Advil may increase the threat of lethal conditions such as stroke or heart attack, especially if you use it on a long term basis.



Signs seen in the patients when an overdose is consumed:

  • Black or bloody stools

  • Dizziness

  • Loss of consciousness

  • Shallow breathing

  • Seizures

  • Stomach or abdominal pain

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Ringing in ears


Management: Do not take Advil in a dose higher than the recommended dose. If these overdosage signs persist, contact your doctor immediately before these symptoms worsen.


Missed dose

Since Advil is used when needed, you may not be on a dosing plan. If you are on a schedule, use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra drug to make up the missed dose.



Advil should be stored at room temperature between 15oC to 30oC. Keep the tablet packs out of the reach of pets and children.
